What can I expect?
Counseling requires a trusting and caring relationship between you and me. I have to get to know you to offer you the best possible therapy. This could be quick, as in a few sessions depending upon what you are struggling with, or take longer. Therapy starts with an intake assessment (a form with many questions about you) that helps me know you better, helps me understand where you are in life and how you got there, problems you are dealing with now, and the best way we work together to solve or relieve what's troubling you. This is our time to set guidelines for how long for therapy might take, set goals for what you want from therapy, help you understand how therapy works, and make agreements. We will discuss confidentiality and any exceptions at this time.
Costs for therapy will be agreed upon during our first session. You can pay for your session before it starts, and subsequent sessions can be paid online (or through Venmo,Cash-App, Apple Pay, etc.) before you come to your next appointment.

During our sessions, I will do more listening than talking, but I will take notes for myself, and use probing and clarifying questions as you talk. You can expect me to give you honest feedback, strategic suggestions, and “homework” to promote personal insight. I often use a mix of strategies from various types of therapies, which is referred to as eclectic therapy.
We will work on some coping strategies during the first session and possibly formal assessments, if needed. The purpose of the coping strategies is to help you manage stress about problems between sessions. Informal assessments are often used before therapy starts and at the end to gauge how much change has occurred. Sessions run about 60-75 minutes. The first initial session usually lasts 90 minutes. As your counselor/therapist, I am invested in you! |
